Step one: check the dress code
Most invitations name a dress code, and it's the most important clue you'll get. Here's what each one means for a male guest:

No dress code? Use this default
If the invitation doesn't say anything, you almost can't go wrong with a navy or mid-grey suit, white or light blue shirt, a simple tie and brown or black leather shoes. For an evening ceremony, go darker, with charcoal or dark navy and black shoes. For a daytime or outdoor wedding in summer, lighter greys, blues and tan are fine.

- Summer: linen, linen-blend or light wool suits in tan, stone, light grey or light blue. Unstructured jackets. Loafers.

- Pocket square: white linen is always right; a subtle patterned silk adds personality.

- Belt: matches your shoes, or wear braces.
