Our sock rules guide covers socks with tailoring. This guide is about everything else: sneakers, loafers, boots, shorts, golf shoes and sandals. The right sock length and type can make a casual outfit look cleaner and more deliberate.
First: know your sock lengths
| Length | Where it ends | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| No-show / invisible | Hidden inside the shoe | Loafers, boat shoes, low sneakers with bare ankles |
| Low-cut / ankle | Just at or below the ankle bone | Sport, golf, running shoes |
| Quarter | Just above the ankle bone | Sport, casual sneakers |
| Crew | Mid-calf, 15–20 cm above the heel | Casual sneakers, boots, streetwear |
| Mid-calf dress | Just below the widest part of the calf | Business casual |
| Over-the-calf (OTC) | Just below the knee | Suits, formal wear |
Socks with sneakers
It depends on the trousers and the look you're after:
- With cropped or cuffed trousers, chinos or shorts: no-show socks, for a clean bare-ankle look.
- With full-length jeans or trousers: crew or mid-calf socks that match your trousers (or your sneakers) look tidy when you sit.
- Streetwear: visible white or coloured crew socks with retro sneakers is a deliberate, sporty look. It's fine as a style choice, but not with smart casual.
Cheap no-show socks slip off your heel all day. Look for a silicone grip strip at the heel and a deep enough cut for your shoe. Loafers need very low-cut versions.
Socks with loafers
- Summer / casual: no-show socks for the classic bare-ankle look.
- With tailoring in cooler months: fine dress socks that match your trousers, or a colour for character (burgundy, bottle green).
- Ivy League / preppy: white or cream socks with penny loafers and chinos is a traditional preppy look, but only if you know that's the vibe you're going for.
Socks with boots
Boots need thicker socks, both for comfort and to stop rubbing:
- Work boots and heritage boots: thick wool or wool-blend crew socks. Grey marl, oatmeal, olive and red are classic, and look great showing above cuffed jeans.
- Chelsea boots: medium-weight socks matching your trousers. With a suit, use a fine dress sock.
- Hiking and winter boots: merino wool hiking socks for warmth and moisture control.
Socks with shorts
Keep it simple:
- With loafers, boat shoes or low sneakers: no-show socks.
- With sport sneakers: ankle or quarter socks in white, grey or black.
- Avoid dark dress socks pulled up with shorts, unless you're deliberately going for a fashion look.
Socks for golf
On the course, comfort and blister prevention are what matter:
- Cushioned golf socks with moisture-wicking fibres and arch support.
- With shorts: low-cut or ankle golf socks, usually white, black or grey. Some clubs have specific rules, so check our golf dress code guide.
- With trousers: crew-length golf socks.
- In cold weather, merino blend golf socks help keep your feet warm.
Socks with sandals?
Traditionally a hard no. That said, fashion has embraced socks with sandals as a deliberate, ironic look, usually thick white or coloured socks with chunky sandals. If you do it, own it. For everyone else, bare feet with sandals is still the safe choice.
Socks for sport and the gym
Use technical athletic socks with cushioning in the right places and synthetic or merino blends that wick sweat. Cotton gym socks hold moisture and cause blisters. Replace them when the heel wears thin.
Building a sock drawer
A well-organised sock drawer makes getting dressed much easier:
- 6–8 pairs of dress socks in navy, charcoal and brown (buy identical pairs so you never need to match).
- 3–4 pairs of patterned dress socks for personality.
- 5–7 pairs of no-show socks for summer and loafers.
- 4–6 pairs of casual crew socks in grey and neutral colours.
- 2–3 pairs of thick wool boot socks.
- 5–7 pairs of sport socks, kept separate.
Remember, socks are just one part of the outfit. For the shoes that go with them, see our shoe guide.
